BLACK OPAQUE

BLACK OPAQUE

Research and development by our Italian manufacturing partners has resulted in this special galvanic finish that creates a perfectly uniform matte black. A cataphoretic lacquer is applied to the surface and oven-dried at temperatures over 150 degree Celsius.

Features & Benefits

Uniquely strong and durable, the matte black finish is coated with a varnish similar to that used in the automotive industry. The result is a finish that is completely flawless. The flat, uniform finish has no ripples or orange-peel effect.

Applications

A finish that bridges the gap between old and new, black opaque is available in most products in our contemporary and some classical collections.

Care & Maintenance

Black opaque can scratch or chip under extreme force and should be cleaned with warm, pH-neutral soapy water and a soft cloth.

PATINE STEEL

PATINE STEEL

Patine steel has a silvery-black appearance and was invented to match the appearance of old iron gates outside Italian villas. Each product is electroplated in nickel before being placed in a chemical bath to etch a beautiful black patina.

Features & Benefits

The patine steel finish is designed to evolve over time the more the products are touched. Natural oils and acids on our hands gradual wear away the black patina to reveal more of the medium warm satin nickel base.

Applications

Designed to match the appearance of iron gates, patine steel is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications and is a popular finish in Pittella’s Classical Collection.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with a soft cloth. The patine steel finish does not require chemicals, water or soap for cleaning.

ANTIQUE BRASS

ANTIQUE BRASS

When architects and interior designers began expressing a desire for a classic antique brass finish, Pittella’s manufacturing partners invented an accelerated aging process that creates an authentic antique appearance. Bronze designs are bathed in a chemical liquid with square chips of timber collected from a forest in Northern Italy. The colour from the timber and chemical reaction is leached to form a warm, lustrous antique brass finish. Pittella was the first to introduce this unique finish to the Australian market in 1992.

Features & Benefits

The nature of the staining from the wood chips ensures that each product is unique. Its characteristics also change over time. Natural oils and acids on our hands gradually soften the finish on the handles in the areas they are touched. The areas that are not touched become darker overtime as they oxidise. This organic process enhances the classic charm of the designs.

Applications

Fittings in antique brass finish can be used anywhere for any project as this finish has no limitations, and is available predominantly in our Classical collection.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with a soft cloth. The antique brass finish does not require chemicals, water or soap for cleaning.

316 AISI GRADE STAINLESS STEEL

316 AISI GRADE STAINLESS STEEL

316 AISI is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel with good strength and excellent corrosion resistance to chloride attack and against complex sulphur compounds. As a result, it is typically used in marine conditions, or where industrial pollution is heavy.

A common query regarding 316 grade stainless steel is how it differs to 304 Grade Stainless Steel. The simple answer is 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to help resist corrosion to chlorides (like sea water and de-icing salts).

Pittella stock a range of products that are suited to marine or industrial climates

CORK

CORK

Cork is a sustainable product that is both renewable and recyclable. It is an impermeable buoyant material, harvested from the Cork Oak (Quercus Suber), which is endemic to southwest Europe and northwest Africa. The extraction of the bark is a process that is done by hand. A cork tree can be harvested 12 times in its lifetime, and when harvested, absorbs three times the amount of CO2. Cork also possesses excellent insulation qualities, in fact, NASA uses it in their space shuttles!

The use of cork has been traced back thousands of years to Egypt where it has been uncovered in tombs and also by the Ancient Greeks and Romans as a building material for their homes. However, it was the French monk Dom Perignon who was responsible for the huge demand for this natural material when he replaced wooden bottle stoppers with a cork alternative.

A significant push into sourcing sustainable and eco-friendly products in design and architecture has opened a creative space for cork to be more than just a bottle stopper. Its waterproof and elastic qualities make it a popular floor covering, furniture design and interior accents.

Pittella have introduced a beautiful cork joinery pull designed by world-renowned British designer Jasper Morrison

ZAMA

ZAMA

Zama is a high quality zinc alloy which is the most desirable metal when considering zinc for die casting due to its excellent finishing characteristics for plating, painting and chromate treatments. Pittella hardware that is die cast in zamak offers precise casting and superior dimensional stability.

Die casting is a metal casting process in which molten metal is forced into a steel mold under high pressure into a mold cavity. This process produces accurately dimensioned, sharply defined, smooth or textured-surface metal parts.

Pittella’s manufacturing partner based in Italy ensure high quality results with a wide range of finishes such as tumbling and polishing.

ITALIAN OAK

The warm tone of Walnut and Oak make them the perfect choice for Pittella timber joinery. All timber is sourced from Italian forests and is of the highest quality.

LEATHER

LEATHER

Pittella source high quality top grain leather for our door hardware and bathroom accessories collection.

Top grain leather is sanded and buffed to take away imperfections to ensure a luxurious uniform finish.

Sourced from the tanneries of Northern Italy which is the cradle of traditional Italian leather craftsmanship, our products are expertly tanned using the environmentally friendly process of vegetable tanning.

CRYSTAL

CRYSTAL

Crystals are beautifully organized rock formations that have amazed humans for thousands of years. They consist of atoms, ions or molecules, which are arranged in an ordered pattern to create a lattice that extends in all directions.

Crystals pre-date mankind and known for their metaphysical healing properties, adornments and religious practices in Ancient Egypt. As crystals are transmitters of energy, they are used in modern technology as well – from watches to computers through to laser technologies.

Recently, the use of crystal in contemporary interiors as a means of adding luxury, glamour and sparkle has made a comeback and signals the increasing desire for classic and luxurious materials of the finest quality.

Pittella’s Crystal collection is specifically sourced and handmade from Vinci in Florence. This area has been made legendary by the forefathers who migrated here from Murano in Venice in the 15th century, to carry on the Murano foundry skill set.

BRASS

BRASS

The primary material Pittella work with is Italian Brass; due to its strength, pliability and resistance to corrosion. Produced for millennia, brass is a binary alloy (comprised of copper and zinc) that is well known for its quality and workability, not to mention its aesthetic qualities.

It was around 1st century BC that the Romans discovered how to produce brass through a cementation process using copper and zinc which was widely used as coinage. It was around the same time that the Indian subcontinent uncovered the process of speltering brass (directly alloying metallic zinc with copper). But it wasn’t until the 1700s that zinc formally become known as a metal, which led to the process for combining these metals to make brass being patented in England in 1781.

The use of metals, and brass in particular, is being embraced by the architectural and interior design communities which is driving the revival of this recyclable, distinctive and timeless material. Whether it be polished, brushed, beaten or raw, brass pairs perfectly with other natural materials such as wood and ceramic. We are seeing it used in a variety of applications such as wall cladding and kitchen joinery through to most interior fittings such as lighting, furniture and door hardware.

Not only do the majority of Pittella products use solid brass as its base metal for door hardware, but we also provide a beautiful range of high quality brass finishes
