Steven Leung is a wonderful example. Over the past 18 years, he has led renowned design projects around the world, including Sing Yin at W Hong Kong and London Shangri-la Hotel at the Shard. The Hong Kong based designer is also acclaimed for his work on the Nanjing Mandarin Palace, which was awarded the iF Design Award in 2016 for its distinguished modern touch and contemporary architectural style.

Leung worked closely with Pittella’s partner manufacturer in northern Italy to design and produce the H377 door handle which, until now, has only been available in Pittella’s unique opaque black finish. TURA by Pittella Design delivers a full circle solution

TURA by Pittella Design delivers a full circle solution

As Charles Eames once wisely said, “The details are not the details, they make the design.” This saying resonates loudly when attempting to encapsulate the essence of our latest architectural door and joinery hardware series we are launching in the Australian market. The collection is called TURA, and it is a watershed moment in our history, as it marks the beginning of a beautiful and refined design story that has a bright future here at Pittella – this range will eventually extend beyond handles and pulls, and into other aspects of interior finishes in time to come.

knlured architectural joinery door hardware

Integral to the foundations of architecture, TURA, first made its presence felt with Antonio Citterio’s   ‘K2’ door handle in 2001. Various leading designers, including Tom Dixon who was keen to celebrate the strength of British manufacturing, have reinterpreted the handle’s knurling grip. The sensation, as well as the functionality of handling a knurled surface has been on our product roadmap developing this with our Italian manufacturing partner.

Conceived in-house  by Simone Pittella, the TURA collection was born from the increasing imperative for our architects and interior designers to communicate the same language of materials in their interior projects. And while Citterio started with a lever handle and door pull, Pittella brings forth our own expression with an entire range dedicated to knurling; from door pulls greeting visitors, to wall hooks, to handles on everything from joinery to our new tapware collection.

The signature design feature of the TURA collection is a remarkable diamond-cut knurled pattern. Each piece is meticulously hand rolled by Italian artisans to support a textured, firm grip that feels incredible in hand. Made from solid brass, we are revealing four initial products; the TURA Joinery Knob, the TURA joinery pull, the TURA Entry Pull and the TURA Lever handle.

Pictured above is the TURA Joinery range featuring an extra-long 500mm sized pull (far left) – a unique and rare dimension that draws the eye to perceive an elongated cabinetry height. Alongside, the TURA knob (second left) with the beautiful detailing around the circumference.

The TURA Entry Door Pull (third image) boldly shakes the hand of all entrants, while the TURA lever handle (far right) functions on both internal and external swing doors for aesthetic consistency.

Not only will the entire collection feature the same diamond cut knurled pattern, but is also meticulously manufactured using the Pittella specialty finishes– each piece can be finished in Black Opaque, Satin Brass or Oil Rubbed Bronze.

Pittella’s NEW Specialist Tumbled Brass Fittings

Pittella’s NEW Specialist Tumbled Brass Fittings

Pittella now offers a new brass finishing process for its collection of premium-quality door hardware. Developed to allow its products to age just as elegantly as the finest interior environments, Pittella’s ‘Tumbled Brass’ process gives its solid brass designs a beautifully worn patina that develops unique characteristics over time.

The new Tumbled Brass process produces a natural, worn patina for our door handles and pulls. The finish is achieved by placing raw brass products into a tumbler containing small stones about the size of a 5 cents piece. The raw brass products are then ‘tumbled’ to allow the stones to remove unwanted casting marks without the use of chemicals, giving the brass a unique worn appearance.

The resulting worn-surface finish then takes on a special characteristic over time. Areas that are touched by the hand become lighter while areas that are rarely touched darken and oxidise as they age to create a beautiful and unique luster.

While the Tumbled Brass process complements many interior styles, it is particularly suited to organic and sustainable interior design schemes and is available for a selection of hardware designs, including:

Designers We Love: Jasper Morrison

Designers We Love: Jasper Morrison

Since the 1980s, world-renowned British designer Jasper Morrison has brought understated, functional beauty to everyday objects – from chairs and kitchenware to door handles and joinery hardware. We’re proud to have one of his influential designs in the Pittella Contemporary collection, which features premium designs from celebrated international architects and designers.

Jasper Morrison’s industrial and furniture designs helped define the term ‘New Simplicity’. After gaining a Master’s degree in Design from London’s Royal College of Art, Morrison set up his Office for Design in 1986.

Within three years he began a collaboration with Vitra with an exhibition called ‘Some New Items for the Home, Part II’, at Milan’s Furniture Fair. Further collaborations followed with projects for Italian companies Alessi, Flos and Magis, for whom he created the Air Chair in 1999. Crafted from a single piece of plastic, the chair remains one of Morrison’s most famous designs.

In 2006 he collaborated with Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa on the exhibition ‘Super Normal’ at Axis Gallery in Tokyo. This exhibition inspired the opening of the Jasper Morrison Shop next to his London studio in 2009.

Morrison remains one of a small group of industrial designers who work on a global scale by using advanced technology to develop mass-manufactured products.

A wonderful example of Morrison’s dedication to simplicity is the R2012 joinery pull in the Pittella Contemporary collection.

Made from cork, this perfectly round joinery pull has a texture like velvet and fits effortlessly in the hand.

Available in three sizes, it can be used as a handle for drawers or cupboards or even as a coat hook. It’s a classic statement of simplicity from Jasper Morrison.

Pittella’s Art Deco door handle collection

Pittella’s Art Deco door handle collection

With sleek lines and bold geometric forms, our Art Deco range of door handles and furniture handles bring the golden era of design to modern interior spaces. Made in Italy by Enrico Cassina, the Art Deco range exudes the sophisticated elegance of this influential design movement.

As a Melbourne-based family business we have been producing and importing high-quality architectural door fittings and bathroom accessories since the 1970s. In addition to our own team of skilled in house designers, we also works with esteemed international design partners to form a collection of the finest architectural door fittings and bathroom components.

The Pittella Art Deco door fittings, which are included in our Classical product category, feature three striking designs from Enrico Cassina. A Milanese artisan and expert in bronze work, Cassina opened his first workshop in 1850 and crafted sophisticated designs using carefully created moulds and expert finishes. By the late 19th century, his name was synonymous with high-quality, stylish door fittings and his work became a prominent symbol of the Milan’s elegant buildings.

Distinctive geometric motifs are a prominent feature of the Pittella’s Art Deco collection. Such precise forms are created through the process of diamond polishing – a finishing process that uses a diamond point to create bright, geometrically perfect surfaces.
