316 AISI is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel with good strength and excellent corrosion resistance to chloride attack and against complex sulphur compounds. As a result, it is typically used in marine conditions, or where industrial pollution is heavy.

The simple answer is 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum.
